Milky Gear Case Oil - October 2006
If oil is drained from the lower unit and looks milky in substance that is a definite sign that water is mixed with oil and somehow getting into the gearcase. There are a few ways water can be entering the gearcase. The seals can be checked by pressure testing the unit or vacuum testing to 15lbs. If oil is left to sit water will separate and go to bottom of gearcase. On small leaks check drain plug seals or propshaft seals for fishing line. The ultra hpf or xr gear lube is desighned to compensate for water in oil and is the reccommended gear lube for most outboards.
